Colorado Wants to be No. 1 Destination for Life Science Companies

Nearly two dozen Colorado organizations hope to leverage the momentum of a growing life sciences sector in the state with a new campaign that recruits more companies to locate here. The effort, called the Colorado Hub for Health Impact, touts the state's highly educated talent pool, central U.S. location, successful fundraising and more as reasons to make Colorado a hub for health innovation, its leaders say.

If it has to do with health and innovation in Colorado, Fitzsimons Innovation Community is bound to be a part of it. We are especially proud to be an Innovator Partner in our state’s life sciences ecosystem campaign: Colorado Hub for Health Impact. This campaign brings together more than 20 Colorado organizations to promote the benefits of working, living, and discovering in Colorado to a national audience. The campaign is spreading the word about how our excellent infrastructure, lab and manufacturing space, and outstanding academic and research institutions make the perfect home for life sciences companies of all sizes.

GelSana Wins Inaugural Mines Venture Fund I Investment

Colorado-based biomaterials company GelSana Therapeutics has received seed equity funding from Mines Venture Fund I, which invests in startups led by Colorado School of Mines faculty, staff, alumni, students and formal partners. It’s the Mines Venture Fund’s first investment since it launched in December 2023.

CU Anschutz: With Quantum Leap, CU Anschutz Set to Pioneer Advancements in Medicine

“There is a lot going on in Colorado right now because of the tech hub designation,” said Laura Buccini, DrPH, MPH, MA, assistant vice chancellor for research development and strategy at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. “But quantum sensing and quantum computing are things we’ve been talking about in medicine for years.” CU Anschutz is part of Elevate Quantum Colorado, along with CU Boulder, CU Denver and other institutions of higher education. The consortium includes over 70 private and government industry companies and organizations.

Nature Showcases Strength of Fitzsimons’ Collaborative Environment for Advancing Health Innovation

Johannes Fruehauf recognized a need for co-working laboratories — flexible rental lab spaces with shared equipment and consumables — a few years before he sold his first biotechnology spin-out company, Cequent Pharmaceuticals, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2010. At the time, he had started providing wet-lab consulting services to venture capitalists, so they could see whether he could replicate results from start-up companies that they were considering investing in. Some of those small companies asked whether they could rent a corner of his lab.
