As we close out this milestone year celebrating our 25th anniversary, we’ve been reflecting on the incredible journey from visionary concept to thriving hub of health and life sciences innovation. Throughout 2025, we’ve shared fun insights on social media about the lessons learned, the a-ha moments discovered, and the collective wisdom gathered from the brilliant minds who call our Community home. Now, we’re bringing all the fun together in one place—a celebration of what makes Fitzsimons Innovation Community truly special.

These 25 learnings represent more than just our evolution; they capture the spirit of collaboration, resilience, and bold thinking that defines our campus. We also find amusement in the little things, because we know that high performing teams not only work hard but they have fun doing it. From breakthrough discoveries to everyday moments of connection, each lesson has shaped who we are and who we are becoming.

A Recap of the Top 25 Things We’ve Learned in 25 Years

#1 Proximity to clinical excellence accelerates innovation – thank you University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus – best neighbor EVER!

#2 Community is the ultimate innovation catalyst – we want everybody on our campus to succeed!

#3 Every stage of development deserves big support – we meet innovators where they are and help them accelerate to where they are going!

#4 Leading-edge facilities are just the beginning – the real magic happens when you add experts, advisors and cheerleaders to the amazing space we offer!

#5 Failing forward is innovation’s best teacher – we are proud that we have learned to fail fast, iterate quickly, and pivot on purpose.

#6 Interdisciplinary collaboration breaks down silos – “networking” with scientists is fun and always productive – at FIC it drives even more innovation.

#7 Regulatory navigation requires early planning – understanding regulations is essential and part of everything we do. Some say, “knowledge is power.”  We say, “knowledge means FDA approvals!!”

#8 Talent attracts talent – yep, it’s the nerdier version of “if you build it, they will come.”

#9 Patient-centricity must drive every decision – we never lose sight of our purpose – we are making someone’s life better, healthier, more meaningful or saving it. That’s why we get out of bed in the morning (that, and the coffee from Change Please).

#10 Intellectual property is one of our Community’s biggest assets – protecting intellectual property is smart and helps ensure you are doing some novel and meaningful and makes you feel really smart at dinner parties.

#11 Diversity of thought enhances innovation – diverse thinking produces revolutionary breakthroughs.

#12 Access to capital requires more than great science – brilliant research is just the starting point you have to know how to produce it, ship it, market it, account for it!  But don’t worry – we got you.

#13 Mentorship multiplies impact – knowledge shared is knowledge grown and trust me baby, our community members are sharing and growing!!!

#14 Speed to market can make or break – moving quickly from concept to clinical trial to market can mean the difference between life-changing impact and missed opportunities – “you snooze, you lose”.

#15 Partnerships extend capabilities – superheroes are stronger in a group – and so are we because those partnerships with academic institutions, industry leaders, and fellow innovators are expand what’s possible.

#16 Data-driven decision making reduces risk – the most successful innovators are those who can blend instinct with evidence. “My gut says…” is a great beginning, but “The data shows…” wins the race.

#17 Continuous learning is non-negotiable – we think curiosity is one of the best traits on our campus – and that means we are all learning, all the time.

#18 Culture eats strategy for breakfast – we take seriously building a culture that supports risk-taking, collaboration, and excellence, underpinned by love.

#19 Global perspective enhances local impact – we have relationships around the globe that help us increase our impact and build our knowledge and DEN helps make that connection easy.

#20 Sustainable thinking creates long-term value – we are not only committed to saving lives, but we are focused on doing our part to save our planet.

#21 Communication is as important as innovation – if you can’t explain what you are doing simply, you might need more coffee and fewer acronyms. 

#22 Resilience is the ultimate competitive advantage – our researchers have the emotional stability of a guidance counselor and the determination of a honey badger.

#23 Quality over quantity in team building – it’s better to have a small team of exceptional, committed individuals than a large group of merely competent ones.

#24 Purpose-driven innovation attracts purpose-driven talent – the teams on this campus are driven to make an impact and make a difference.

#25 The future belongs to bold visionaries – the future of health and care will be shaped by those brave enough to push boundaries and challenge conventions. Our campus is filled with people who understand that limits are often moveable, and we couldn’t be prouder.

Looking Back and then Ahead

Looking back on these 25 years of innovation, collaboration, and discovery, we’re filled with gratitude for every researcher who stayed late in the lab, every entrepreneur who took a bold leap, every mentor who shared their wisdom, and every team member who chose to make Fitzsimons Innovation Community their home. We never stop being glad they chose here to do what they do best. The lessons we shared here often aren’t learned in boardrooms or from textbooks—they’re forged through countless hours of hard work, moments of inspiration, and a shared commitment to transforming the future of health and care.

Heading into 2026 and beyond, we remain committed to fostering an environment where visionaries continue to transform discoveries and research into lifesaving patient outcomes. Here’s to the next 25 years of breakthrough moments, unexpected collaborations, and innovations that will change the world.
